Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office, attributing his decision to health-related concerns. His resignation was tendered in a letter dated December 1, 2025.
A statement released by the State House on Monday, through the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the Minister’s resignation with immediate effect.
President Tinubu expressed deep appreciation for Badaru’s contributions to the nation, particularly his leadership during a period marked by intensified security challenges and ongoing defence sector reforms. The President commended him for his commitment to national service and wished him a full and speedy recovery.
Badaru, aged 63, previously served as the two-term Governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023. His exit comes as the Federal Government prepares to implement a nationwide security emergency, with President Tinubu expected to outline additional measures in the coming days.
While the statement did not disclose further details about the Minister’s health condition, it confirmed that President Tinubu will forward the name of his preferred successor to the Senate later this week.
