Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking his first official break since assuming office on May 29, 2023.
The leave, which began on Thursday, August 6, 2026, will provide the Vice President with an opportunity for study, reflection and intellectual renewal as he prepares for the next phase of the administration’s governance agenda.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha.

According to the statement, the period away from official duties will enable Senator Shettima to review the Federal Government’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and strengthen his capacity for continued service as the administration intensifies implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The statement noted that since taking office alongside President Tinubu, the Vice President has remained actively involved in coordinating and supervising key government initiatives, particularly in the areas of economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, employment generation and regional cooperation.
As Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC), Shettima has presided over meetings involving the governors of Nigeria’s 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior government officials, providing a platform for deliberations on economic policies and national development.
Beyond his domestic responsibilities, the Vice President has represented President Tinubu at several regional and international engagements, promoting Nigeria’s interests on issues including economic integration, investment, peace and security, climate action and sustainable development.
The Presidency said the leave reflects the administration’s recognition of the importance of continuous learning and strategic planning in effective public leadership.

It added that throughout his tenure, Shettima has remained committed to the principles of loyalty, duty and public service while supporting President Tinubu’s vision of building a more secure, prosperous and productive Nigeria.
The statement expressed confidence that the Vice President would return to office at the expiration of the leave with renewed energy, fresh perspectives and greater commitment to advancing the administration’s development objectives.
