Ogun at 50: NUJ Celebrates Five Decades of Progress, Media Legacy and a Vision for the Future

As the Gateway State marks its golden jubilee, NUJ Ogun reflects on history, applauds leadership, and calls for renewed patriotism ahead of the next political era.

As Ogun State marks its 50th anniversary, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, has joined millions of citizens in celebrating five decades of remarkable growth, resilience, and transformation.

Since its creation in 1976, Ogun has earned its reputation as Nigeria’s “Gateway State,” distinguished by intellectual depth, industrial expansion, and political awareness.

According to the NUJ, this journey is one the media has not only documented but actively helped to shape.

Paying tribute to the founding fathers of the state, the Union acknowledged the visionaries who laid the administrative and social foundations that continue to drive prosperity across Ogun’s three senatorial districts.

The NUJ emphasized that the story of Ogun State is closely intertwined with the evolution of Nigerian journalism, noting that many of the nation’s most respected media pioneers trace their roots to the state.

From the early days of statehood, journalists have served as the bridge between government and the people, translating policies into public understanding through consistent reportage and constructive criticism.

The Union also commended past and present administrations, from the era of military governance to successive civilian governments, with special recognition given to the current administration for its “Building Our Future Together” agenda.

The NUJ noted visible strides in infrastructure development, industrial revitalization, and the sustenance of Ogun’s status as Nigeria’s industrial hub.

Addressing its members, the NUJ chairman, comrade Wale Olanrewaju congratulated journalists across the state for their commitment and professionalism through periods of political transition and social change, noting that their work has helped position Ogun as a reference point for peace and development in Nigeria.

While acknowledging existing challenges, the Union maintained an optimistic outlook, stressing that Ogun’s developmental trajectory remains upward. It described the state’s evolution from a collection of provincial towns into a thriving industrial corridor as evidence of enduring resilience.

Looking ahead, the NUJ called for heightened patriotism as the state approaches another election cycle. It urged political actors to prioritize the collective interest of the state over personal ambitions, assuring that the media would continue to promote accountability, development-focused discourse, and citizens’ welfare.

The Union stressed the need for Ogun to transition from being a “Gateway” in name to a “Gateway” in world-class functionality.

This, it said, requires investment in the digital economy, improved rural infrastructure to support agriculture, and ensuring that ease of doing business translates into ease of living for residents across the state.

Reaffirming its commitment, the NUJ pledged to continue holding leadership accountable while spotlighting opportunities that can drive further growth.

It expressed confidence that stronger collaboration between government, the private sector, and the media would position Ogun as not just a gateway to Nigeria, but to the African continent.

The NUJ concluded by congratulating the government and people of Ogun State on the golden jubilee celebration, expressing hope for continued peace, prosperity, and progress in the decades ahead.
