Terrorists Abduct Worshippers in Attack on Kogi ECWA Church Last Sunday

Gunmen storm First ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu LGA; one killed, multiple worshippers abducted amid rising insecurity

Several worshippers were abducted on Sunday, December 14, 2025, after terrorists attacked the First ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, in a violent raid that left the community in fear and chaos.

According to local sources, the gunmen stormed the church during an ongoing service, firing sporadically to instil panic among congregants. While many worshippers fled, an undisclosed number were seized and later taken through nearby bush paths, escaping before security forces could respond.

One person, identified as JayJay, was reportedly killed during the attack, intensifying concerns over the worsening security situation in rural Kogi State communities. Residents described scenes of fear, confusion, and distress as the incident unfolded.

This attack marks the second assault on churches in the Okun region within weeks. On November 30, 2025, terrorists raided a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area, abducting the cleric Orlando and approximately 13 worshippers. The assailants initially demanded ₦500 million in ransom, later reducing it to ₦200 million, threatening families with unspecified consequences if unmet.

The Ayetoro Kiri community has also experienced previous attacks, including a strike on a local school about three weeks ago. Vigilante groups reportedly repelled that attack, preventing casualties and abductions, though the recent church attack demonstrates the persistent security challenges facing residents.

The incident has renewed calls from residents and local leaders for stronger security measures to protect rural communities, places of worship, and vulnerable populations amid the rising wave of terrorist activity in the state.
