Teachers in Ogun State earn 15 per cent more than their counterparts in public schools in other states, Chairman of the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, Apostle Abiodun Sanyaolu, has said.
Sanyaolu disclosed this on Monday, October 5, while speaking on a radio programme in Ilese-Ijebu, as Nigeria marked the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.
The TESCOM chairman said the salary advantage was part of the Ogun State Government’s efforts to improve teachers’ welfare and make the profession more attractive in the state.
“I always say this, that the best supporting government to our teachers in this country is Ogun State,” Sanyaolu said.
He specifically highlighted the state’s remuneration structure, saying, “The teachers in Ogun State enjoy a superlating 15% higher salary than any other public school.”
According to him, the improved remuneration had also made Ogun attractive to teachers from other parts of the country, while the government continued to introduce measures aimed at strengthening the teaching workforce.
“Going forward again, you will see that in Ogun State, we are leading while others are following,” he said.
Sanyaolu said the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration was particularly significant because it would be the final such celebration under the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun, providing an opportunity to reflect on developments in the education sector during the administration’s tenure.
He said the government had prioritised teacher welfare alongside recruitment and workload management, noting that efforts had been made to redistribute teaching periods across schools.
According to him, some teachers had previously handled as many as 36 periods in a week, while others had considerably fewer teaching periods.
He said the redistribution exercise was designed to reduce pressure on teachers carrying excessive workloads and achieve a more balanced arrangement across schools.
“The redistribution exercise was done to remove workload from some teachers and to remove this workload in such a way that even if it is not equal, it will be close,” he said.
Beyond remuneration and workload, the TESCOM chairman highlighted the government’s investment in digital skills, saying teachers were being equipped to cope with the increasing role of technology and artificial intelligence in education.
“If teachers are not computer literate, how will they teach their students or take advantage of the AI tools available today?” he asked.
Sanyaolu said computers had been provided and made accessible in selected schools to support teachers’ digital training, adding that computer literacy among educators had improved despite initial resistance to the programme.
“At the moment, we are seeing us migrating from the computer age to AI age,” he said.
He also disclosed that Ogun had introduced a digital lesson-note system designed to reduce the manual burden associated with lesson preparation.
According to him, teachers can access lesson notes through an application, make necessary adjustments and use the materials for classroom instruction.
He said the innovation was intended to reduce administrative pressure and give teachers more time to concentrate on teaching and learning.
Sanyaolu, however, acknowledged that more work remained to be done in the education sector, saying the government would continue to address areas requiring additional intervention.
“We still have a lot to do, and the government is going to work, work, and seriously work,” he said.
On the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, the TESCOM chairman disclosed that Governor Abiodun would announce additional welfare packages for teachers at the grand finale of the celebration.
“The Governor is going to release some packages to our teachers as he always does,” he said.
“There is no year we will celebrate without giving out packages to make our teachers extremely happy,” he added.
The grand finale is expected to take place at the June 12 Cultural Centre, where the governor is expected to address teachers and unveil the packages.
Sanyaolu said the celebration would also provide an opportunity to recognise teachers and assess some of the interventions undertaken in Ogun’s education sector, including teacher welfare, recruitment, workload management and digital reforms.
He expressed the hope that the reforms and programmes introduced during the current administration would be sustained and further developed by subsequent governments.
