President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Ahmed Abubakar Audi as the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for another five-year term, reinforcing the administration’s confidence in his leadership of the paramilitary agency.
The renewal, which took effect on Friday, February 27, comes as Dr Audi concluded his initial tenure that began in 2021 when he was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The development was disclosed in a State House statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Dr Audi will formally resume his duties on Monday with a renewed mandate to reposition the corps and expand its operational relevance within Nigeria’s evolving security framework.
President Tinubu also charged the NSCDC leadership to strengthen the agency’s role in safeguarding critical national assets and supporting internal security efforts, particularly at a time when security institutions are adjusting responsibilities to address threats such as banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
Dr Audi, who hails from Laminga Town in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, has built a long career within the civil defence structure, beginning as a volunteer officer in November 1996. After completing his basic officer training the following year, he was deployed as a Divisional Officer in Obi Local Government Area of the state.

Over the years, he served in several state commands before rising through the ranks. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Commandant of the Corps and deployed to the office of the Commandant-General at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja, where he continued to play key administrative and operational roles before eventually emerging as the head of the organisation.
Dr Audi’s academic journey reflects a strong background in administration and law enforcement. After his early education in Nasarawa State, he attended Teachers’ College in Jengre, Plateau State, where he obtained a Teachers’ Grade II Certificate in 1987.
He later earned a Nigeria Certificate in Education from the College of Education, Akwanga, in 1992, before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Physical and Health Education in 1995.
He further advanced his studies with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from University of Calabar in 2001, a PhD in Public Administration from Nasarawa State University in 2014, and later a Master’s in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice from Ahmadu Bello University in 2019.
His reappointment comes at a time when the NSCDC is expected to deepen its role in protecting infrastructure, supporting community safety initiatives, and complementing broader national security operations across the country.
